Horacio Larreguy is an economist with research interests in the areas of economic development and political economy. In the area of economic development his research focuses on the impact of formal financial development on household insurance. In collaboration with Arun Chandrasekhar and Cynthia Kinnan, he is investigating the impact of formal financial intermediation on household insurance in a context of household informal insurance networks by utilizing randomized experiments in rural Karnataka, India. In the area of political economy his research focuses on the impact of institutions such as property rights and state capacity on economic development. He is currently analyzing the relative impact of institutions and human capital exploiting 19th – 20th century colonial and missionary activity. He is also currently investigating a unique natural experiment created by the British in Nigeria to study the impact of local state capacity on economic development. Horacio is currently in his 3rd year at the PhD in Economics Program at MIT and expects to graduate in June 2012.
